At Westwood Primary School, we recognise the vital role PE plays in developing children physically, socially, emotionally, and cognitively. It also supports their spiritual, moral, and cultural growth.

Guided by the Lancashire PE Passport, we deliver a broad and balanced curriculum that fosters self-confidence and equips children with the skills to manage their bodies effectively across various movement situations. By integrating meaningful links with other subjects, we inspire enthusiasm for physical activity and promote an understanding of how exercise supports healthy development. We also utilise our Sports Premium funding to enhance our provision through partnerships with South Ribble Sports Development, delivering expert coaching, staff training, and enrichment opportunities to benefit all pupils.

Our PE curriculum embodies our school values:
Aiming High, Achieving Together

We encourage every child to strive for excellence physically and mentally while working collaboratively and supporting one another.

Intent

Build confidence and physical competence through developing a range of movement skills.

Promote fitness and a healthy lifestyle by understanding the benefits of exercise.

Foster teamwork, creativity, and fair play.

Develop problem-solving, decision-making, and evaluative skills in PE.

Implementation

Children in all year groups participate in two hours of high-quality PE weekly, following the Lancashire PE Passport framework. In EYFS, activities focus on coordination, movement, and spatial awareness. In KS1, children build fundamental movement skills, while KS2 pupils apply and refine these skills through activities such as gymnastics, dance, athletics, swimming, and outdoor challenges.

Swimming lessons in KS2 ensure children aim to meet the national goal of swimming 25m by Year 6, with top-up sessions provided in Year 6. Enrichment opportunities, such as inter-school competitions, clubs, and active play initiatives, support our aim to reduce inactivity and encourage lifelong physical activity.

Impact

Through our PE curriculum, children enjoy fun, engaging lessons that build confidence and foster teamwork. By developing skills, understanding, and a love of physical activity, pupils are empowered to lead healthy, active lifestyles, reflecting our values of Aiming High, Achieving Together.
